Systems Engineer

American Bureau of Shipping Washington, DC Full-Time

The Systems Engineer is responsible for the ongoing operation and support of business applications computing environment. The Engineer provides expert network engineering approaches for IT Infrastructure. The evaluation, design, and documentation of solutions are critical in the role of the Systems Engineer.

 What You Will Do:

Responsibilities of Data Center Manager, plus:

  • Act as a technical lead in the installation and day-to-day support of the ABS business application infrastructure.
  • Oversee the analysis, design, implementation, security, troubleshooting, and administration of system platforms, which support the Company’s business applications suite.
  • Responsible for setting and maintaining midrange computing platform standards. (i.e., hardware, software, tools, utilities, storage, recovery, etc.)
  • Perform system capacity planning and analysis.
  • Research and propose new technology upgrades.
  • Prepare budget-related projections and plans.
  • Make reports and technical presentations as required.
  • Interface with application support and DBA personnel as well as internal and external customers.
  • Specify and interact with multiple outside vendors and coordinate vendor services to meet the needs of the business computing environment.
  • Provide guidance and recommends continuing technical and professional development for subordinate staff members.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent, from an accredited university, in data processing or equivalent industry experience.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of previous related experience, including extensive knowledge and experience with multiple midrange hardware and operating systems, including major Unix variants, scripting tools, and shells.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Capable of managing multiple priorities through the development of project plans and project management.
  • Experience working with groups that support infrastructure applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experienced in the design and maintenance of midrange computer systems.
  • Data analysis and modeling.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment with little supervision.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent reports directly to the Program Manager. This position does not have any direct reports.
